U.S.-Japan Policy Forum
[ Access China-2010 ]
In April 1996, Gateway Japan will host on its Internet site a U.S.-Japan
Policy Forum involving invited U.S., Japanese and other Asian experts.
Conducted jointly by the National Planning
Association and the Center for
Global Communications at the International University of Japan, and
funded by the United States Institute of Peace,
each Forum session will:
- address a series of major Asian issues confronting both countries
- be on an issue selected by participants
- be moderated by both a Japanese and an American expert on each subject
- last approximately 3 months
- provide an extensive online library of issue-related documents, studies,
etc.
- conclude with recommendations for measures to optimize policy cooperation
and minimize conflicts between the two Pacific powers
Participants will change with each new issue. The Forum will provide e-mail
and web-integrated mechanisms to facilitate communications. Participants
will be able to access the online issue library by World Wide Web, gopher
or FTP. Initially in English only, subsequent dialogues wil benefit from
bilingual communications and text search
software.
Following each Forum discussion there will be produced both a print and
an online summary of each proceeding with consensus conclusions and
recommendations. This will then be
opened to Gateway Japan members. Resources
permitting, Gateway Japan will also establish an open-access dialogue on
each issue for world-wide users.
