A Musical Narrative with Violinist Ikuko Kawai

The Tale of GenjI

Follow Japan’s famous Tale of Genji, often considered the world’s first novel, in this original interpretation for violin, keyboard, and traditional Japanese instruments, led by popular violinist and composer Ikuko Kawai. Japanese artworks—including screens, paintings, and illustrated books—depicting scenes from the story are currently on display in the Freer Gallery of Art. This event is part of Japan 2019, a series of events highlighting Japanese arts and culture in the United States throughout 2019.
