Futago Oni Kenbai

2700 F St NW
Washington, 20566 United States

Oni Kenbai is a traditional folk performing art passed down primarily in Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture. Dancers wearing oni masks perform powerful and dynamic sword dances. Its origins lie in Buddhist Nenbutsu dances and it holds historical religious significance, including warding off evil spirits, praying for abundant harvests, and honoring ancestors. The dance is performed to the accompaniment of drums and flutes and is characterized by vigorous movements and refined gestures. It is presented at local festivals and Bon events in Japan and has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
