National Cherry Blossom Festival Brings the Arts to Spring’s Biggest Welcome Party for Third Consecutive Year
‘Art in Bloom,’ ARTECHOUSE DC, 2023 Official Artwork, and Student Art Showcase Bring Artistic Interpretations to Life Throughout 2023 Festival
Washington, D.C. [March 1, 2023] — The National Cherry Blossom Festival today announced the Art in Bloom program, presented by Amazon, will return for another year. Giant cherry blossom sculptures, designed and painted by local and international artists in 2021 and 2022, are still scattered around the Washington, D.C. area, waiting to be found by residents and visitors.
New this year, the Festival is collaborating with ARTECHOUSE DC to create a special XR experience to enhance the beautiful lighting of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge within a geo-fenced area encompassing both sides of the Anacostia River through Anacostia Park and Capitol Riverfront. Download the ARTECHOUSE app at www.artechouse.com/xr/ and view the bridge in a new dimension, March 20-April 16.
2023 Official Artist Orlando Quevedo’s signature style of magical realism will take on a new dimension with a real-life immersive photo opportunity sponsored by Park West Gallery that lets festival-goers step into the 2023 Official Artwork. Find the unique photo opportunity at Pink Tie Party and Petalpalooza presented by Chase. Learn more about the 2023 Official Artwork at https://nationalcherryblossomfestival.org/about-us/#2023OfficialArtist.
A cherry blossom “Art + Play” pop-up will allow kids and adults alike to construct their own cherry blossom forests with interconnecting cherry blossom ‘follies.’ Keep an eye out for this source of endless fun and creativity at Blossom Kite Festival presented by Hilton, Petalpalooza, and Oxon Run Pinknic & Kite Fly presented by Chase.
This year’s Student Art Showcase will follow the theme “I Am in Full Bloom” and allow D.C. students from grades K-12 to submit original artwork that celebrates the beautiful spirit of the blossoms, springtime, and friendship. The virtual gallery will open March 28. Viewers can vote on which piece best symbolizes the feeling of being in full bloom. Also, select Student Art Showcase pieces can be seen in person on April 8 at Petalpalooza, and will be featured on special bottles provided by Corner Water. Find more details at www.NationalCherryBlossomFestival.org/Student-Art-Showcase.
Many custom-painted Giant Cherry Blossom Sculptures continue to bloom year-round in public spaces throughout D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, including National Landing, for residents and visitors to enjoy. Some will be out on display just for the 2023 Festival. The Festival asks people to tag their Art in Bloom sculpture photos on social media with #ArtinBloom. An Art in Bloom sculpture location map can be found on the Festival website at https://nationalcherryblossomfestival.org/event/art-in-bloom-event/.
