Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets

A Live Cherry Blossom Mural Installation in Dupont Circle Park

Artist and DC Native, Chris Pyrate will be returning to Dupont Circle for the 2024 National Cherry Blossom Festival!

In 2019, Chris painted a series of panels to create a pop up mural installation for the Dupont Circle Metro. The piece brought the Cherry Blossoms to Dupont with Chris’s hand painted brilliant blooms. This time he will be scaling his signature Cherry Blossom imagery to tremendous proportions. Dupont Circle residents and festival goers will have an opportunity to see the ongoing mural work and installation being created in real time. The end result will be a semi-permanent work of art for Dupont Circle and attendees of the National Cherry Blossom Festival to enjoy!

Art in Bloom

PRESENTED BY AMAZON

ART IN BLOOM

Art in Bloom, presented by Amazon, celebrates the magical and whimsical mystique of the D.C. area, while honoring its vibrant arts scene.

A community-wide visual arts exhibition, Art in Bloom radiates spring with 26 oversized cherry blossom statues that have been painted by local artists and placed in  in all eight wards of the District, plus Maryland’s National Harbor and the Aurora Highlands and National Landing neighborhoods in Northern Virginia.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to go on a Blossom Hunt – finding the sculptures, posting a photo to Instagram or Twitter; tagging the Festival and using #artinbloom in the caption. Now through May 31, 2021, the Festival is randomly selecting one photo entry per week to win a $25 Amazon gift card; and selecting one photo entry at the end of May to receive a $500 Amazon gift card.

To learn more about the artists, see behind-the-scenes videos of their sculptures coming to life, and view the #ArtInBloom Photo Contest entries, go to nationalcherryblossomfestival.org/art-in-bloom.

Japanese Stone Lantern Lighting Ceremony

National Conference of State Societies

Japanese Stone Lantern Lighting Ceremony

Presented by the National Park Service & National Conference of State Societies

Join NCSS and the National Park Service for the traditional lighting of the Japanese Stone Lantern, located amidst the cherry blossom trees. Lantern is approximately 375 years old and weighs over 4,000 pounds and given as a gift by Japan in 1954.

Musical Prelude starts at 2:30 PM with ceremony beginning at 3 PM until 4:30 PM. This ceremony marks the first public appearance of the 2024 U.S. Cherry Blossom Princesses.

The Japanese Stone Lantern was presented in 1954 to Washington, D.C. as a gift to commemorate the 100th anniversary of America’s first treaty with Japan. It is lit only once a year, and by the Cherry Blossom Princess representing Japan. Standing 8.5 feet tall and weighing approximately 4,000 pounds, it was carved nearly four centuries ago to honor the Third Shogun of the Tokugawa period. It stands 50 feet east of the first two cherry blossom trees planted by First Lady Helen Taft and Viscountess Chinda (wife of the Japanese ambassador) in 1912, and it is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Will be cancelled if inclement weather. There is no rain date
